Eating Disorder Care & Support in Health Services
We understand that eating concerns can impact your physical health, emotional wellbeing, and academic work, and we’re here to help you take the next step toward support, healing and ongoing care. While our team is not equipped to provide comprehensive eating disorder treatment, we can play a supportive role in your care. Below is a summary of what we can offer, and what we cannot provide, to help you understand how we can best support you on a case-by-case basis.
What We Can Help With:
- Initial Check-Ins: We offer limited assessments to help identify eating concerns and determine whether further evaluation is recommended.
- Bridging Care: If you're in the process of connecting with a primary medical provider, we can offer short-term support (like basic medical monitoring) to bridge the gap until you’re established with a full care team.
- Medical Monitoring for an Outside Provider: If you're already working with a primary care provider or treatment team, we can assist by collecting data like vital signs, blind weights, lab tests, and sharing it with your provider as part of your treatment plan.
- Referral Support: Skidmore can help you connect with local and/or virtual providers, including medical providers, therapists, dieticians, and psychiatrists who are experienced with eating disorders. Our colleagues in the Skidmore Counseling Center will assist with referral support.
What We’re Not Able to Provide:
To ensure students receive the safest and most effective care, there are some services we are not able to provide:
- We cannot act as the primary medical provider for ongoing eating disorder treatment.
- We cannot provide long-term medical management of eating disorders without involvement from a full treatment team.
- We do not provide nutritional counseling on-campus at this time but can refer you to licensed professionals who do.
How to Get Started
If you’re concerned about your eating habits, body image, or related physical or mental health, please reach out. We can schedule a confidential appointment to talk about your concerns, explore what support you may need, guide you to the right resources, and communicate and work with your treating providers.
